[Name]: Toothless
[Canon]: How to Train Your Dragon
[Age]: Unknown, presumably young for a dragon.
[Gender]: Male
[Canon Point]: End of
[History]:
Supply and demand, survival of the fittest, whichever way you looked at it, there would always be objection from the side opposite of the receiving. The dragons that dwelt near the island of Berk were only doing what was necessary, and as the Vikings of the island thrived, it was seen as most ample gathering grounds for food.
The dragons were great in number, and had been considered by the Vikings as a terrible pest that plagued their village and pillaged their livestock and goods. Food raids would come almost nightly depending on the season, what little were to be had on the island, filling the skies with hordes of Monstrous Nightmares, Zipplebacks, Gronkles and Nadders. ...and then there was the mysterious and frightening Night Fury, which hardly anything was known about.
Toothless never partook in actually gathering food. His part was always distraction and destruction, and being fast and practically unseen under the cover of night, he was very good at his job. His fiery blasts never missed their targets, and nothing could catch him. By the time they knew one was upon them, something exploded. This all changed, one fateful night. One moment, he was swooping around after a successful hit on a catapult, and the next, he'd been hit by something and suddenly rendered unable to fly. The dragon plummeted into the wilderness of the island, and he did not escape unscathed. Half of his tail fin had been ripped away in his crash landing, and being entangled in ropes, escape seemed futile. He was going to die, and if any of those Vikings found him, his fate was most certain.
While he was found by a Viking, it was the very least likely that one would ever think to accomplish such a feat as to bring down a Night Fury. Hiccup was probably just as amazed that he'd actually succeeded, but although his intent had been to kill the beast and bring its heart back to his father as proof of his deed, the scrawny Viking spawn could not bring himself to go through with it. Toothless, who feared for the worse, was resigned to his fate- only to discover that slowly the bindings that ensnared him were loosening, and the boy was working quickly to free him for some bizarre reason. He'd been as good as dead, and suddenly freedom was once again before him. Once he was able to move, the dragon sprung upon the boy, and it would have been easy to kill him. Yet, Toothless did not. The boy was obviously terrified, despite knowing what he had done. Their positions had been reversed so suddenly, although the dragon couldn't fathom why. Still, he was done a favor, so why not just let the boy off with a warning? Practically deafening him with a scream? Yeah. Perfect.
Unfortunately, escape wasn't so easy for the dragon, who quickly learned of his inability to properly fly. He crashed through the underbrush, and eventually ended up trapped in a secluded clearing with a small lake. Eventually Hiccup had gone to track down the dragon again, discovering that it was unable to fly. Slowly he attempted to gain the dragon's trust, and slowly, the dragon began to accept that this boy wasn't going to leave. He wasn't so bad- after all, he'd brought him food, he made interesting scrawls on paper. From Hiccup, he'd even received a name, based off the initial assumption that the dragon had no teeth- a point quickly proven wrong, but nevertheless, the name stuck.
And then one day, he somehow made a way for Toothless to be able to fly again. In his eagerness to once again be aloft, the dragon immediately took flight, and the first chance he got, tried to be rid of Hiccup who was clinging to his tail, operating the prototype fin replacement. As soon as the boy was dislodged, his flight was interrupted by the lack of control as soon as the device closed up again. At this point it became apparent that Toothless would have to rely on Hiccup if he wanted to get airborne again. After numerous designs and testing, the young Viking managed to do just that, and with training and teamwork, soon both he and Toothless were flying high.
Things would have been fine if they hadn't been found out. HIccup's curious behavior had drawn attention, that being from Astrid, a young Viking girl from his village that he'd had a crush on for some time. Despite a rather rough introduction, Astrid was soon swayed to see that perhaps not all dragons were bad. Their sky cruising was drawn short once Toothless decided to bring the two to the isle where the dragons made their nest. He needed to show them something, and he wanted them to understand. Numerous dragons joined their flight, all returning to the nest with various offerings of food, all of which they dropped into a deep chasm in the caverns at the base of a volcano. It was here that the the Viking duo discovered that there was a much bigger problem behind the dragon raids, and they beat a hasty return to Berk. Toothless could sense the concern (as well as the potential love) between the two humans. The night had ended pleasantly enough, but unfortunately such would not last for long.
The next day marked when Hiccup would try to show the other Vikings what he'd learned about dragons....and would be the start of when everything went wrong. His attempt to pacify the Monstrous Nightmare failed miserably with the angry intercession of his father. Befriending dragons? Stoic wouldn't hear of it. The Nightmare was set off by the sudden tumult of events, and Toothless heard the commotion if not sensed Hiccup's danger. The dragon quickly rushed to his friend's aid, fending off the larger dragon. Though he had succeeded in saving Hiccup from the Nightmare, the Vikings were another matter. They lept upon him, and now acting out of defense for himself, the dragon very nearly killed Stoic if not for Hiccup's cry. The little Night Fury was locked away and Hiccup was to face the wrath of his father.
Later on, the Vikings would set out again on another mission- what they determined would be the last trip to seek out the dragon's nest and put an end to them once and for all. They loaded Toothless aboard one of their ships, Stoic having learned that the key to finding the nest was to have a dragon with them. With Toothless along, the ships were able to navigate through the fog and the narrow cliffs before finally arriving at the shores of the nest. In typical Viking fashion, the burly warriors punched a hole into the volcanic mountain, releasing a stream of dragons. Soon enough they also discovered what lay in wait in the depths as a huge dragon broke through and began to attack them. Toothless was still trapped aboard one of the ships when they were lit aflame, but Hiccup and the other young Vikings had by then reached the island and begun a counter attack on the great dragon. Hiccup came to Toothless' rescue, but unfortunately was too weak to free the dragon, and as the ship sunk beneath the waters, the boy nearly drowned in his attempt. Stoic came to his rescue then, and with his inhuman strength had Toothless freed in no time. The Night Fury was quick to insist on joining the others, and once Hiccup was aboard, they immediately joined the fray to finish what had been started.
Their strategy was simple, and soon they had the enormous dragon taking to the air in pursuit of them while the others looked on from below. With Toothless' superior speed, it was easy for the little dragon to maneuver, and every fireball hit its mark. When the time came, the two dropped into a dive, waiting for the opportune moment to make the final blow, blasting fire into the larger dragon's gullet while it was still preparing to fire upon them itself. The chain reaction was devastating, ripping and burning through the creature, and Hiccup and Toothless were left to evade its fall with a mangled tail fin. They ended up taking a direct hit by the dragon's club-like tail. Boy and dragon were separated, Hiccup knocked unconscious and plummeting to his doom as a desperate Toothless tried to reach him before the flames...
Amidst the fall of ash and clouds of smoke, the Vikings sought out survivors, and Stoic was devastated when he saw Toothless lying in a heap, riderless. Exhausted but still breathing, the dragon revealed that he had indeed managed to save Hiccup, although not completely unharmed. Still, the danger was over, and the dragons were no longer seen as threats. They could return to the village in peace. When Hiccup reawoke, he was back at home and with Toothless hovering beside his bed. The bridge between Vikings and dragons had been established, both living together in Berk in harmony, and Toothless was ever eager to have his flying companion back.
[Personality]:
Despite being tamed by Hiccup, Toothless is by no means domesticated. ...not that Vikings are very domestic to begin with. He's learned that perhaps not all humans are bad, just as Hiccup has in turn learned the same of dragons. The dragon is still quite wary of the two-legged species, and will treat most with caution until proven that they're trustworthy. He can still be quite vicious, a dangerous little package of ferocity, and being plunked down in completely foreign territory will likely be cause enough for him to fall back on his survival instincts.
For those fortunate enough to know Toothless well enough that he's comfortable around them, they'll find that his behavior is not too unlike that of a giant cat. It doesn't help that sometimes he may even act the part, which would be rather awkward considering this is a rather large, winged lizard instead of a small, furry mammal. Food is the easiest way to his heart, and the dragon seems to have a penchance for fish especially, if not meat in general. Just be careful, because he might be a little too generous in wishing to share his meal with the thoughtful donor, and usually that means having half of whatever was fed to him ending up upchucked into your lap. He means well, though!
It's all a matter of whether he can trust you or not. Once you do gain that trust, then he can be quite the loyal friend. He can also be very protective of said friends, and won't hesitate to attack if he feels they or himself are threatened, in which case the situation can get quite dangerous if someone doesn't rein him in.
Despite his size, Toothless is by no means a coward. He's not afraid to take on things several or a hundred times his size. That's not to say that he's reckless. He only fights as necessary, and when he does, he gives it his all. He's a tenacious little dragon who doesn't know when to quit.
He's learned from his exposure to Hiccup how to try and mimic certain expressions and behavior from humans. Dragons usually don't have much need for facial expressions except to glower at a person when threatened, but Toothless has made passable attempts at gummy smiles. He can even manage to look bored or unamused. In the short time he's known Hiccup, the dragon has certainly picked up a lot from him, and it's gotten to the point that these expressions do seem to actually connect to the proper emotions that humans would readily identify.
Another thing that the dragon has come to learn from his human counterpart is teamwork. While he has certainly to some extent worked as a team with other dragons during raids of the Viking village, it was never a deeply knit relationship between the others. For all the assistance he provided when it came to distraction and laying siege to his targets, when it came down to it, things were always a matter of self-preservation. The dragons made off with what food they could, and they didn't think twice about leaving behind those who had been killed or captured. With Hiccup, Toothless has learned that survival for both of them hinged upon the trust they were willing to place in each other. Without Hiccup, Toothless would never have been able to fly again, and it took sharp reflexes on both their parts to fly as fast and precise as they could. A false move or a minor bump of miscommunication could be dangerous for them, and although their learning to work together to fly was no walk in the park, it's made them quite close to the point that Toothless is completely willing to trust Hiccup's judgment, and that they have come to such an understanding that they can work as one.
Perhaps not nearly as wild as he was before, Toothless is a lot more daring and carefree than other dragons might initially be, perhaps due to his exposure to Hiccup. Being a relatively young dragon accounts for his extra curiosity and boldness when it comes to trying new things. He understands a lot more than one might expect from a creature that seemed to spend most of its time raiding and pillaging, but even this could have been seen as a sign of intelligence by way of tactical maneuvers. Even against insane odds, Toothless isn't afraid of a challenge, perhaps more so with his growing bond with Hiccup. He has found something to protect, and someone who likewise would do the same for him.
The dragon definitely has a playful side. He can act like an overgrown cat at times, and at other times just seem like more of a broader, strangely shaped Viking pal who chums it up with Hiccup. He likes hanging out and he likes to mess around with his odd, scaleless friends. Due to the size and strength differences, he's learned to be a little more careful with how much he roughhouses with his Viking twig buddy, but at the same time, he knows that he has a definite advantage and isn't afraid to make use of it to bring a point across. Of course, that won't stop him from using his Viking as a pillow now and then just because it seems convenient. He's always had this penchant for sharing something that's given to him, and certainly he means well. Of course, others might not think the same when they end up with, say, half of a regurgitated fish in their lap.
At times he can be a bit of a goof, and it's probably only because of his becoming close to a human that he's learned things like being silly, as well as doing things for fun just for the sheer enjoyment of it. Flying at breakneck speeds, zipping between treacherous cliff sides and plunging from deadly heights? It's quite a rush, and all the more enjoyable when sharing the moment with someone. He used to be a lone wolf after all, operating alone, and even amongst the dragons of the nest, there weren't any other Night Furies to associate with.
[Abilities / Strengths & Weaknesses]:
As a dragon, Toothless is capable of projectile blasts. Him being a Night Fury, his fireballs take a more violet hue and seem to be more concentrated when first fired off. They prove most devastating when paired with his superior flight speed, making him the very equivalent of a night divebomber plane equipped with plasma blasts. The farther these blasts travel, they tend to expand outwards into a ring of flames. Toothless also seems to break the rule that the other known dragons of his world follow- that being the number of shots he can take with his fiery blasts. It seems that he can expel an indefinite number, as well as blow a continuous stream at short range that can scour the ground. The latter, he has not used so much for offensive purposes over marking space.
As mentioned earlier, the dragon can fly. He's built sleek and for speed, cutting through the air with ease. When he'd participated in the Viking village raids, under the cover of night, he would dive bomb their defenses with deadly accuracy.
Unfortunately, due to his initial meeting with Hiccup, the left fin of his tail has been ripped off, effectively incapacitating his ability to fly. Since then, the Viking boy has made an artificial fin for the dragon, and with teamwork, the two have been able to learn how to fly together as one. As it is, Toothless can't fly very far or very high without Hiccup actively adjusting his tailfin in flight.
There also seems to be a shared dislike of eels by the dragons of Toothless' world, or at least those within the vicinity of Berk. Whether this is due to the bright coloration of the particular eels in those waters or some other reason is not specified.
[Limited Powers]:
As mentioned above, while Toothless can fly, he needs someone to fly with him in order to operate his fin accordingly. Since Hiccup is the one who designed it, candidates who are able to fly with the dragon are severely limited- not that Toothless will let just anyone ride on him anyway. Also, while he can fly over some considerable distance, he's not a machine and would naturally need rest and food, depending on the situation.

[It's a terrible scrawl that could have possibly originated from a drunk who had been under the impression that writing with his feet was a marvelous idea at the time. It doesn't go for very long, but obviously whomever is trying to write (or draw) has given up on the notion.
There's a voice that sounds some time after, muffled but by the sound of it, probably belonging to a young man. And then there's a sound much closer to the pages of the journal, something that sounds like a grunt or a snort of some sort. An inquiring, gutteral groan follows, and almost abruptly, the page quite literally goes black, not from ink spillage, but something more of the charred variety.]
((Question! Since Toothless isn't much of a talker, would joint posts with Hiccup or someone also suffice for his required network post? Or can I get by with action posts? Just wanting to figure out what my options would be, since people are bound to get tired of a dragon growling at them! xD))
